Blizzard warning in effect for area — Over a foot of snow could fall by Tuesday

A satellite image from the National Weather Service of the coming storm.

A blizzard warning is in effect from midnight Monday until midnight Tuesday for southern Fairfield County, southern New Haven county, southern Westchester county, and metropolitan New York City and New Jersey, according to the National Weather Service.

Heavy snow and blizzard conditions may occur. Snow may mix with or change to sleet or rain late Tuesday morning into Tuesday afternoon. Snow accumulations maybe 12 to 20 inches. The snowfall rates could be two to four inches per hour.

Dangerous whiteout travel conditions could occur at times, with some impassable roads. Winds could be 25 to 35 miles per hour with gusts up to 40 to 55 miles per hour on Tuesday. Highest winds will be across coastal areas like Darien.

A blizzard warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds and poor visibility are likely. The National Weather Service says travel could be extremely dangerous with whiteout conditions and travel is not recommended during a blizzard. If travel is necessary, pack a winter survival kit.

A coastal flood watch is in effect for the same time period.
